4MH: Community Suicide Awareness

This course is being held virtually via Zoom!

This course is designed for anyone who works or volunteers within their community or organisation who think learning about Suicide Awareness is beneficial. The workshop explores the myths and stigma around suicide and the barriers faced. It also explores prevention of suicide, the importance of compassion, how to talk to someone in distress and how to develop a safety plan.

  • This is a dedicated link for your person and cannot be used by another person. If you are unable to attend, please let us know in the first instance.
  • To attend this course you must have a camera and have it turned on throughout the duration of the 1 hour online discussion for the comfort and safety of you, the other delegates and the trainers. We have the right to turn you away if you do not have your camera on. (laptop/computer recommended for more comfortable viewing and participation)

Course Information:

This course has been designed by Connecting with People. The course is there to raise awareness about Suicide and understand why this beneficial. You look into understanding about the stigma and barriers around suicide. Explore the prevention of suicide and the importance of compassion. You get to build your own Safety Plan, which will be useful for you personally and if anyone else needed to build one.

Course Programme:

Now that we are delivering training virtually we routinely ask all delegates to provide us with a contact telephone number that can be used to reach them on the day they are attending the training. This is for the following reasons.

• In the event of connection troubles for the trainers, so they are able to contact all delegates and explain the next steps

• The trainer is concerned for the welfare of a delegate and would like to contact them “outside” of the virtual training environment

Training Outcomes:

By the end of the training, participants will learn about:

  • Understand the myths, stigma and barriers.
  • Know about suicide prevention
  • Understand the “Watercourse Analogy” of distress
  • Understand the importance of Compassion
  • Be able to talk to someone in distress and/or in suicidal crisis and signpost to support
  • Know how to make a Safety Plan with StayingSafe.net
